Chemical DispersionsDispersive forces refer to a physical mechanism that acts between matter and the molecular in the air. If water is compressed, it can get 'squeezed' into the lower parts of the body. This is the result of force, where an area is added to the downward pressure. Due to its low density, it can be very effective in transferring the pressure of a large amount of air from one location to another.As mentioned above, if the force cannot be observed with the naked eye, it can be recorded through the use of GPR or Gaseous Propellant Ram (GP-R). This recorder is also known as the fluid injection method. As soon as the chemical reaction has taken place, the GPR sends an electric pulse through the instrument to record the changes in the gas. During the recording, the liquid-liquid scale would alter the droplet size depending on the chemical reaction and record the information thereon.GPS is another option to observe dispersion forces. It basically means the collection of data through the use of sound waves. The data collected from a GSM radio can be used to create a map or graphic representations. This GPS receiver can be calibrated to your local time to give you accurate time.Chemicals react by giving rise to gas which is released into the air. In fact, it is a chemical process, so the water molecules get squeezed between atoms. When there is a great mass of water, this is referred to as a weak dispersion force, where only a little amount of liquid can enter the air, and the molecules can be squeezed together to form a gas.There are many forms of dynamic gas dispersion. The most common form is the Vorticity Dispersion that requires the use of nitrogen. In the case of ammonia, the dissociation process involves nitrogen or its mixture with other gases. If there is too much of the chemical in the air, the atoms would start dissolving.These reactions cause air to be broken down. They are usually observed in the form of a cloud that appears to be white due t o the scattering of light. This is often referred to as the ultraviolet dispersion and the larger the volume of air the greater the effect.Dispersive forces are very useful in many applications. The main advantage of these is that they are able to test chemicals and other substances without exposing any person to them. Some examples are: the use of oil spill sensors to detect petroleum products, the use of GPS to see potential oil spills, and the use of dispersion forces in medical experiments. Dispersive forces are now being considered in the design of many high technology instruments and products.

What is a Pentagon What is a Pentagon? Geometry is a branch of Mathematics which deals with the study of shapes and their properties. A polygon is 2-dimensional figure which has straight lines connected together to form a closed shape. It is important to note that a polygon does not have curved sides. The straight lines form the sides and angles of the polygon. The word poly- means many and -gon means angle. Based on the number of sides a polygon has, they are named differently. For instance, a triangle is a polygon with 3 sides, a rectangle is a polygon with 4-sides. Now, a polygon which has 5 sides, thus forming 5 angles is known as the Pentagon. The word pentagon refers to penta- meaning 5 and -gon meaning angle. Pentagons are very commonly observed in various geometric calculations and thus play an important role in geometry. As shown in the diagram below, a pentagon has 5 vertices and 5 edges (or sides). Types of Pentagons: Regular and Irregular Pentagons: Pentagons are classified into 2 types based on their side measurements. The 2 types are Regular Pentagon and the Irregular Pentagon. Regular pentagon is a pentagon which has all the 5 sides of equal lengths. This also implies that all the 5 angles of the regular pentagon are equal. However, for an irregular pentagon, all the 5 sides and the 5 angles are not of equal measurement. This can be observed in the diagram as shown below. Convex and Concave Pentagons: Pentagons can also be classified into 2 types based on their angle measurements. The 2 types are Concave Pentagon and Convex Pentagon. Convex Pentagon: But if all the interior angles of a pentagon are lesser than 180, then such a pentagon is known as the Convex Pentagon as shown in the figure below. Properties: In a convex pentagon, all the vertices point outward away from the interior of the pentagon. A line drawn through a convex pentagon will intersect the pentagon twice. All the diagonals of the convex pentagon lie inside the pentagon as shown in the figure below. Concave Pentagon: If one or more of the interior angles of a pentagon has a measure greater than 180, then such a pentagon is known as the Concave pentagon. These are opposite to the convex pentagons. Properties: In a concave pentagon, vertex appears to be pushed inside the pentagon. A line drawn through a concave pentagon (depending on where the line is drawn) can intersect the pentagon at more than 2 points. The figure below shows that the line drawn intersects the pentagon at 4 points. Not all diagonals of a concave pentagon lie inside the pentagon. Some of the diagonals may also lie outside as shown in the figure below. Angles of a Pentagon: 1) Sum of the Interior Angles of Regular Convex Pentagon: We can find the sum of all the angles in a regular pentagon as well its each interior and exterior angle. If a convex regular polygon has n sides, then the sum of all its interior angles, S = (n 2) * 180 A pentagon has 5 sides, so applying the above formula we get: Sum of all the interior angles in a regular convex pentagon, S = (5 2) * 180 = 540 2) Interior angles of a Regular Convex Pentagon: We can find the interior angles of a Regular Convex Polygon of n sides by using the formula: Each Interior angle = (n 2)/ n * 180 Each Interior angle of Regular Convex Pentagon = (5 2) / 5 * 180 = 108 3) Exterior angles of a Regular Convex Pentagon: We can find the measure exterior angle of a Regular Convex Polygon of n sides by using the formula: Each Exterior angle = 360/n Each Exterior angle of Regular Convex Pentagon = 360/5 = 72 4) Diagonals of a polygon: Diagonal of a polygon is a line segment that joins any two non-adjacent vertices. Number of diagonals in a polygon of n sides = n * (n 3)/ 2 Therefore, number of diagonals in a pentagon of 5 sides = 5 * (5 3)/2 = 5 diagonals. Perimeter of a Pentagon: Perimeter of a polygon (regular or irregular) can be easily calculated by simply adding up all the side lengths of the polygon. Perimeter of a Pentagon = Sum of all the side lengths of the pentagon In case of a regular pentagon, all its sides are equal. If the side length of a regular pentagon = s, then the Perimeter of a Regular Pentagon = s + s + s + s + s = 5s Example: Calculate the perimeter of a regular pentagon whose side length is 6m. Given side length, s = 6m Perimeter, P = 5 * s = 5 * 6m = 30m Area of a Pentagon: Area of a Regular pentagon can be calculated by using different measurement and methods. One of the easiest way to calculate the area of regular pentagon is by using the below formula: Area of a Regular Polygon, A = 1/2 * Apothem * Perimeter (Note: Apothem of a Polygon is the perpendicular line segment drawn from the center of the polygon to the midpoint of one the polygons sides). Area of a Regular pentagon: Area of a regular pentagon can be calculated by using trigonometry as follows: Let the side length of the regular pentagon, PQ = s (as shown in the figure) OM is the Apothem and let its length be = a MQ = s/2 (as M is the midpoint of PQ) Interior angle of regular pentagon = 108, hence angle OQM = 108/2 Therefore, angle OQM = 54 In triangle OMQ, tan (54) = Opposite side/ Adjacent side = OM/ MQ tan(54) = a/(s/2) == tan(54) = 2a/s == a = s/2 * tan(54) Area of a Regular Polygon, A = 1/2 * Apothem * Perimeter Therefore, Area of a Regular Pentagon, A = 1/2 * s/2 * tan(54) * 5s = 5s2/4 * tan(54) This can be simplified to Area of a Regular Pentagon, A = 1.72 s2 (approximately) Area of an irregular polygon: This can be calculated by dividing the polygon into set of triangles, and then adding the area of each triangle to get the total area of the irregular pentagon. Example: Calculate the area of a regular pentagon if its side length is 6m. Area of a Regular pentagon = 1.72 * s2 == Area = 1.72 * 62 = 1.72 * 36 = 61.92m2 Therefore, area of the given regular pentagon = 61.92m2

VT: What is the single most important thing applicants should focus on in a medical school application? Michelle: Your overall goal throughout the application process is to distinguish yourself from other candidates, and the best way to do that is by showcasing your achievements. The admissions process is a persuasive one: Your role is to convince medical schools that you deserve a slot at their institutions. The best way to persuade is with facts, just like a lawyer does when s/he is trying a case in front of a judge. Saying you are compassionate or hardworking is not convincing. You need to prove your value by relating your academic, clinical, research, community service, leadership, international, or teaching achievements in a way that builds your case. VT: What are the biggest mistakes one can make on a med school application? Michelle: A few of the mistakes Ive see are as follows: 1) Excessive modesty. It's okay to be a shy person but not a shy applicant. 2) Applying unrealistically. Ensure you apply to enough schools and make sure your list includes true safety schools. To get a sense for your competitiveness, compare your GPA and MCAT scores with those in the Medical School Admissions Requirements book published by the AAMC and speak to an experienced advisor. 3. Having no clinical experience. Institutions not only want to see that you are committed to patient care, they need to ensure you have some small idea of what you are getting yourself into. 4. Sacrificing your GPA for extracurricular activities. Achieving academically is critical, even if you have a compelling candidacy in other ways. Applying to medical schools is like trying to get on a ride at Disneyland; if your grades are not as tall as their sign, they won't even let you get in line for consideration. Applicants have told me they feel thei r bad grades have followed them like a criminal record. Dont let this happen to you. VT: How much time should be set aside to adequately prepare for and complete a med school application? Michelle: Good writing takes a long time; successfully finding a qualified reader to critique a rough draft and then incorporating critical feedback takes even longer. Start to craft your personal statement, AMCAS activities, and most important statements in January with a goal of getting them submitted as early as possible, which is usually early June. VT: What do med school admissions officers look for most in an applicants essays/personal statements? Michelle: They are seeking example of achievement written in a compelling manner. In other words, a riveting essay that has no content no evidence of a candidates achievements isnt adequate. Nor is a statement that has a lot of content but is boring to read. VT: Is there anything on a students application that would automatically disqualify him/her from being considered for the program? Michelle: These factors depend on the institution. Different schools weigh academics, MCAT scores, and extracurricular activities differently. Of note: AMCAS does include a criminal background check; illegal activity can be a deal breaker for many schools if not adequately explained. VT: What undergrad majors best prepare one for med school applications? Michelle: The key here is to excel academically in whatever major you choose. Im not the kind of advisor who will tell you to pursue something you dont like to get admissions officers attention. That tactic is not only annoying, it usually doesnt work. VT: Is there anything you might see on a students application that would quickly put them ahead in the running? Michelle: A breadth of achievements academic, clinical, research, community service, leadership, international, and teaching are notable. Also, pursuing a passion successfully can get you noticed. When I was applying to medical school, I highlighted my work in domestic violence and sexual assault prevention. I showcased the leadership I had had in spearheading, coordinating and implementing a campus-wide awareness week. Pick something that calls to you, and really take it up a notch from what others have done in the past. VT: What advice do you have regarding MCAT test prep? Michelle: Start early and note how you best learn. Pursue a program that complements your learning technique. You might do best with a private tutor, formal program, or by studying with friends. VT: What do med school admissions officers look for in recommendation letters? Michelle: When I was in academic medicine, a colleague once pointed out the word shy in a letter of recommendation because he took that term as very pejorative! The point is that officers are looking for small hints in every letter, and you want yours to be as good as possible. You should not settle for so-so letters; you need to get the most superlative letters you can. In other words, consider a mediocre letter a bad one.
